VINTAGE Redouté ROSE BOOK PLATE ON BOARD “Rosa Brevistyla Leucochroa”

This is a stunning vintage Redouté bookplate of a “Rosa Brevistyla Leucochroa” or “White Dog Rose”; the details are exquisite.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté (10 July 1759 – 19 June 1840), was a painter and botanist from Belgium, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers at Malmaison, many of which were published as large, colour stipple engravings. He was nicknamed “the Raphael of flowers” in the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time.  You can see why can’t you; the attention to detail is fabulous.

This one has been gently glued on hardboard and waxed to protect it and to give it a time-worn appearance.  It can easily be displayed by propping up on a shelf, dresser or wherever takes your fancy; it is a beautiful vintage piece and a collector’s item; do you know anyone who would love this displayed in their home; we certainly do…!
